LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Washington is famous for its cherry blossoms in the spring and Texas is known for its roadside bluebonnets. But in Kentucky, April means the pink blossoms of redbud trees.
Three national scenic byways are recommended for redbud-viewing: the Country Music Highway, along U.S. 23; the Wilderness Road Heritage Highway, along U.S. 25; and the Red River Gorge Scenic Byway along state roads 11, 715 and 15. Other roads with good opportunities for viewing the flowering trees include the Daniel Boone/Hal Rogers Parkway between London and Hazard; the Kingdom Come Parkway along U.S. 119, and the Cumberland Cultural Heritage Highway, a scenic byway along state route 80 from Edmonton to Russell Springs, which includes U.S. 68 from Edmonton to KY90, KY55 from Columbia to Campbellsville, and KY68 from Campbellsville to Greensburg, and U.S. 127 from Russell Springs to Danville.
You can enjoy the redbuds from the window of your car, get out for a hike on a trail like the Sheltowee Trace in the Daniel Boone National Forest, or attend a festival like the Redbud Trail Festival on the Union College Campus in Barbourville, April 10-12.
Places of interest around the redbud roads include the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park, marking the trek of early pioneers who crossed the mountains on foot; the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum in Benham, and Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, where you can enjoy the waterfalls and spend the night. In the small town of Stearns, you’ll find the Big South Fork Scenic Railway, an old coal mine railroad into the gorge of the Big South Fork, a tributary of the Cumberland River. And in Renfro Valley on a Saturday night you can hear country music at the Renfro Valley Entertainment Center.
