When I was in secondary school, there was a systematic way to keep the students disciplined. It%26#8217;s called the merit and demerit system. I don%26#8217;t know if other school still practice such system these days but it was very systematic until every students need to buy a merit/demerit handbook.
In other words, it%26#8217;s another cheap systematic way for the school to earn more money from the sales but I have no complaints because the book does not cost that much anyway. What do we usually do with the handbook? It%26#8217;s not for wiping our sorry ass when you run out of toilet papers. No wonder I saw these demerit handbooks are stuffed in the toilet bowls. I used to remember my school toilets are notoriously famous for its toilet.
Not for the cleanliness but for the filthiness. It is so filthy till you don%26#8217;t feel like shitting. I%26#8217;ll spare you the graphic details but all I can say is the amount of shit that is floating around is enough to fertilize 8 football fields. I am quite baffled we manage to keep our own football field botak with the abundance of shit. Enough of the shit story so let us go back to the demerit system.
Demerit system also acts in a subtle way to remind the students that their reputation and fate lies in the hands of the system. We usually take the system seriously in the first year but we also usually don%26#8217;t give a damn in the next subsequent year. The concept is pretty simple. You basically gain points if you are contributing to the academic and co curriculum achievements of the school. You lose points if you commit crimes within the school compound.
Reading through the list of merit points almost put me to sleep because they are always dull and repetitive. Demerit listing are more exciting because your head will end up in the principle%26#8217;s office once you have ran out of precious points (figuratively speaking). No, you cannot ask some one to donate points to you like some MMORPG games. Your points will be deducted if you are caught cheating, lying, molesting, blackmailing, participating in street fighting and raping.
Okay you don%26#8217;t lose points for raping because you will usually land yourself in jail for committing this offence. I remember the most serious offence is glue sniffing because it will get yourself immediately expelled IF you get caught. Fortunately, fart sniffing is legal. The common punishment for those who got their points deducted to negative level will usually get their ass %26#8216;kissed%26#8217; with a large cane in the public. Not a bad deal if you want to get 50 seconds of fame on the stage with 1000 students watching.
There was once my classmate was summoned by the principle for public caning. His demerit points reached its lowest level. When he came up the stage, the principle started to slap him. I don%26#8217;t know what gone into my classmate%26#8217;s mind because he got pissed and he just went berserk. He retaliated by punching the school principle straight on his face. In split second my school principle fell unto the ground.
I tell you, the priceless moment was not the part where the school principle got punched. The best part is when his wig flew off from his head due to the impact and it landed directly in the longkang. He didn%26#8217;t put it back on his head of course. Pity the principle though because Yunnam haircare center does not even exist in Malacca yet at that time.
ps:- i do not condone my classmate%26#8217;s action for punching my teacher because I was merely writing down every beautiful memories I had during high school. Therefore I shall not be held responsible should there are any one who happen to punch their teachers after this.
