The Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel adapted here is one of the Spanish-speaking world’s most beloved literary works. And just as the Nobel Prize winner’s work suffers in its translation to English, the odd love story loses some of its steam onscreen.
The turn-of-the-century story of a young Colombian boy pledging his eternal love to a pretty, rich girl after just one meeting would seem to be quintessential romance. But given that he loses her to another man yet carries the flame to obsessive lengths for more than 50 years, it is far from Harlequin.
Depending on your view, lovesick Florentino Ariza, as played by Javier Bardem, comes off as either the biggest-hearted romantic in the world or the sorriest sap in the history of jilted lovers.
While the on-locale filming in Cartagena creates a rich, tropical backdrop and sumptuous cinematography, the compression of time and sometimes-hammy acting make for awkward moments. But the story of infernal eternal love is well-propelled with a wry sense of humor, an exotic air of mystery and some of the most bizarre and humorous sex scenes ever committed to film.
