More than 50 percent of Americans older than 25 know this, according to the National Institute for Literacy. That many Americans have read a newspaper weekly, at least one magazine regularly and a book in the last six months.
The thousands swarming to downtown Fort Myers on Saturday probably read books more often.
The ninth annual Southwest Florida Reading Festival lured about 18,000 people last year.
“It’s just a beehive of activity all day long,” says Karen Sloan, festival organizer.
Twenty-eight of the almost 50 attending authors will give presentations.
The authors will discuss, sign and sell books geared to adults, young adults and children.
Typical festival fare plus healthy cuisine will be available.
Many participating authors penned books that hovered for weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.
Featured author Stuart Woods wrote 38 novels. Twenty were bestsellers on the New York Times hardcover list.
His 1981 debut novel “Chiefs” catapulted Woods into fame. Charlton Heston, Danny Glover and John Goodman starred in a CBS drama based on the book.
“Ooh, I like him a lot,” says Kara Winton of Fort Myers. “I gotta hear him talk.”
Winton has been going to the reading festival with her husband and children for the last five years.
The former crime reporter and Fort Myers Police Department spokeswoman loves reading crime and legal fiction.
“We originally started going for the kids because it’s a family event, but my husband and I enjoy it as well. I love to listen to their stories.”
