I am going on a driving holiday in France this summer. We are a party of six
and are having problems with overnight hotel accommodation in or near to
Boulogne %26ndash; we are using the Dover-Boulogne ferry and need a night on both
the way out and back. I have done many an hour of searching the internet and
the only results I have had so far are either costing over %26euro;250 per night
(too expensive) or %26euro;88, but reviews from previous guests suggest a very
small room with dirty bed linen. Can you help? Lee Dunkey, by email
Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: Top choice is the
central and splendid Enclos de
l’Ev%26ecirc;ch%26eacute; B%26amp;B (6 Rue de Pressy, Boulogne. (0033 391 900590;
doubles from %26pound;55), next to the cathedral in the old town. This former town
house is a friendly, tastefully decorated, family run place with locally
themed rooms %26ndash; most eye-catching is the Egyptian offering (celebrating
Boulogne’s own Egyptologist, Auguste Marriette). There%26rsquo;s a restaurant next
door too, owned by same couple, which is reasonably priced.
Another central option is La Matelote
(70 Blvd Ste Beuve, Boulogne, 0033 321 303333, doubles from %26pound;75 during the
week, %26pound;86 at weekends). It%26rsquo;s on the seafront near to the excellent Nausicaa
aquarium, and has good bedrooms with plenty of wood and bright colours.
Or there%26rsquo;s the rather flash Hotel
Cl%26eacute;ry at Hesdin-l’Abb%26eacute; (Avenue des Ch%26acirc;teaux, Hesdin-l’Abb%26eacute;,
033 321 831983; doubles from %26pound;103, though those at %26pound;142 are worth the
extra). It%26rsquo;s a lovely old country house six miles from Boulogne%26rsquo;s centre.
It%26rsquo;s more swish than its three stars would suggest and it%26rsquo;s said that
Napoleon stayed here when contemplating, then abandoning, his invasion of
England. It has a good restaurant too.
