We find ourselves with the best part of a day to fill in Seattle at the end of
a trip to Canada and Alaska, in July, before we fly back to Heathrow on an
evening flight. We will have overnighted at a hotel near the airport. Can
you suggest how to use the day to best advantage, perhaps on a tour? Janna

Sunday Times travel expert Richard Green responds: For terrific views
of the city, which has a backdrop of the iconic Mt Rainier and Space needle
skyline, head to the downtown Waterfront and take a cruise.
Argosy Cruises (206-623-1445) run
one-hour harbour cruises for %26pound;10pp, leaving from pier 55 (six times a day in
summer). Or you’ll get more boating for your buck on the two-hour “Lake
Cruise”, which steams onto lakes Union and Washington. Both have
onboard commentary.
You’ll arrive back at the Waterfront, close to the frenetic Pike Place food
Market, and a 15-minute walk away from the excellent Klondike Gold Rush
National Historic Park, “Seattle Unit”
(Jackson Street and Second Avenue, free). It’s actually a museum with
interactive insights into the lives of the stampeders, many of who started
out from Seattle.
