TSB Bank Arena in Wellington resembled a movie set yesterday as sci-fi, fantasy and comic book fans flocked to the Armageddon Expo for make-believe and dress-up.
Young Star Wars wannabes mingled with freaky monsters and superheroes in supertight outfits. A life-size Doctor Who Dalek character was there, plus several stormtroopers from Star Wars.
Shannon Lambert was one of hundreds of people who attended the two-day event. The 15-year-old Wellington girl was in costume as her favourite character Pyramid Head from the game Silent Hill 2, a horror survival game.
“I’m the bad guy. I try and kill the main protagonist.”
Her reasons for being at Armageddon for the third year running were less sinister: “It gives us a chance to dress up and meet people.”
The arena was heaving with fans of all ages wandering around stalls promoting the latest comic books, clothing, games and other paraphernalia.
Fans could meet television and movie stars including Chris Judge from Stargate, Matthew Armstrong from Heroes and Gary Graham from Star Trek Enterprise and Alien Nation.
Graphic novels and comics, included Japanese manga, were a popular feature.
A group of youngsters were excited after finishing a game of laser tag in a 244-square-metre black inflatable arena.
