In October, my mom, dad, older sister and I traveled from Nashville to Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Macau, Kyoto, Japan, had a short stop in Hawaii and then back home. My dad likes to pack a lot into a trip, and we sure did.
Shanghai is the Chinese version of New York City, with amazing skyscrapers, Starbucks on every corner and the feel of a place that is exploding with new growth. We then flew to Beijing, which is more like what I pictured China to be. In Tiananmen Square, four Chinese men who had come from a small village asked to have their picture taken with us since we were the first foreigners they had ever seen.
My favorite part of our trip was our two-day hike on the Jinshanling and Semitai sections of the Great Wall. The quickest way off the wall is by a zip line that goes down about 600 feet then about a quarter of a mile across a small lake. My dad asked the Chinese lady if it was safe, but the only English words that she knew were “jump, jump,” so we did.
