Midnight March 4 is the “bewitching hour” for Stephen King fans who read his Dark Tower series like gospel.
Marvel will release the first 48-page issue of his second graphic-novel series, “Dark Tower: The Long Road Home,” at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, March 5. The Comic Store, 28 McGovern Ave., will be open for business at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, offering it at the appointed time at $3.99 per issue.
Joe Miller, The Comic Store owner, said he was amazed at the popularity of the first Dark Tower books.
“A lot of Stephen King fans who wouldn’t know a comic book if it jumped out and grabbed them came into the store to look for the books,” he said.
“Fans can expect one hell of a ride” from the second five-issue monthly miniseries, assured Peter David in an e-mail interview. David supplied the narrative voice and dialogue for both Dark Tower series.
In the latest, gunslinger Roland Deschain has seen the death of his lover, Susan Delgado. The Big Coffin Hunters who burned her at the stake are now in pursuit of him and his friends, who are forced to flee into the desert, with Roland in a coma.
David, in New York, is working with Robin Furth, who wrote the plots, and artists Jae Lee and Richard Isanove to make the second series as popular as the first.
“It’s arguably King’s most personal work, so we want to do our best to get everything absolutely right,” he said. Having King looking over his shoulder is “daunting, but also comforting, because we know that if we make a misstep, King will be there to straighten it out.”
King has been very hands-on in both projects. “From plotting the overall arcs with Robin Furth to reading over every line of my dialogue, King is on top of every aspect. And that’s as it should be. The only way we’re going to know if we’re getting it right is if King is approving it every step of the way,” David added.
David and Furth, who works at her home in England, base their renditions on “already existing material. We have as much liberty as King is willing to accord. It’s not as if we’re trying to surpass what King has done; we want to produce a work that he will be both comfortable with and proud of.”
David and Miller agree that graphic novels have become very popular.
They, like “comics, are a unique art form, a combination of words and pictures that can convey stories in a way that neither words nor pictures could do on their own,” Miller said.
