The Vermont Civil War Hemlocks bring the past alive through living history presentations, and now the organization is doing the same for the memories of 48 valiant soldiers.
The group has published a book titled “Everlasting Glory” that tells the story of each of the Vermonters who won the Medal of Honor in the Civil War, giving information on each individual and photographs of many of the soldiers. The work was compiled by Phil S. Rogers, a longtime member of the nonprofit group.
In a press release, the Hemlocks note that the 78-page book runs in chronological order, so readers can follow the Vermont troops through the war and come away with a sense of how and where they served. Each battle where a soldier won the Medal of Honor is summarized, and the particular action for which the soldier won the medal is fully described.
Nineteenth-century line drawings illustrate some of the battles where Vermonters fought. The book is available in both paperback and hardcover. Proceeds are to go toward retiring the debt from the group’s purchase of the Sgt. William Chapin’s artifact, on permanent display at the Militia Museum at Camp Johnson in Colchester.
The Vermont Civil War Hemlocks was founded in the early 1960s and it is one of the oldest Civil War living history organizations in the country.

The place for kids
The Vermont Humanities Council is celebrating the release this week of its second book, “A Guide to Fiction Set in Vermont for Children & Young Adults.” It is Ann McKinstry Micou’s follow-up to her catalog of Vermont-based adult fiction, published in 2005.
That book included such fanciful places as North Bleakwater, Sugar Steeple and Gumby. The new book presents summary descriptions of 441 picture books, easy readers, and children’s and young adult fiction with a Vermont setting, the council says. It includes titles published between 1838 and 2007.
The author bibliography, appendixes and indexes should make it easy to find any title or location (real or imagined).
The book is available for $24 plus shipping at vermonthumanities.org or by calling 262-2626, ext. 304.
