Forty-five years after it was released, the film version of Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” remains one of the most beloved of all Hollywood classics. In a 1995 American Film Institute poll, it placed 34th in the list of great American films. Over the years, whenever I’ve asked a filmmaker his or her all-time favorite films, it’s the title that seemed to pop up most frequently. This includes people you would think might be naturally resistant to its charms, such as Martin Scorsese and Francis Coppola.
