FULLERTON, Calif., March 6 /PRNewswire/ — Albertsons, a SUPERVALU
(NYSE: SVU) company, today announced the official launch of a significant
health program focused on educating children about nutrition and healthy
choices. With childhood obesity impacting one in every three U.S. children
according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Albertsons Healthy
Eaters(TM) field trip program introduces children to healthy eating habits.
Designed to reinforce the nutrition and healthy living curricula taught in
schools, Albertsons Healthy Eaters(TM) field trips are for children in K -4th
grades and provide a fun, hands-on experience that is easy to understand and
absorb.
“As a retail grocer committed to being a leader in the area of health and
nutrition, our company understands the long-term importance of providing tools
and knowledge to enable our customers to make healthier life decisions,” said
Pete Van Helden, president, Albertsons Retail West. “With the launch of our
Albertsons Healthy Eaters(TM) program, we are excited about the opportunity to
make a significant difference in the health and wellness of the children in
the communities we serve.”
Albertsons Healthy Eaters(TM) curricula was developed in conjunction with
Albertsons Nutritionist, Heidi Diller, to ensure that tours provide children
with the right nutritional information, and in a way that young children could
understand and embrace. During the tour, trained tour leaders focus on
several important nutrition-related topics, modified to age group. Primary
students (K - 2nd grade) focus on simple concepts demonstrated through
interactive experiences to promote understanding of healthy behaviors and
choices. For intermediate students (3rd - 4th grade), tours emphasize a
higher-level of thinking and decision making related to healthy eating habits
and nutrition. Lessons include specifics on healthy choices, reading labels,
nutrients, fats and portion sizes that are demonstrated through hands-on
exercises relevant to the grocery environment. At the end of the tour,
participants receive free samples of healthy foods and goodie bags.
“If children learn from a young age how to make the right food choices,
they will be more likely to make those healthy choices throughout their
lifetime,” said Diller. “With the grocery store being one of the most visited
destinations in our every day lives, we have a tremendous opportunity to
educate children and their families about nutrition, and show them how easy it
is to live healthier.”
