Sarah Burns recently flogged her debut novel, Jackfish, The Vanishing Village, on home turf.
Burns, a former Prince resident, now married and living in Colorado, returned to the Sault Ste. Marie area recently to visit her parents, Bob and Fran Burns, and to promote Jackfish, which first appeared in bookstores last December.
The author’s publicity efforts here included signing copies for the Prince Township Public Library’s book club.
The novel, which depicts a woman’s efforts to overcome lifelong depression and guilt, is set in the historical village of Jackfish, Ont., which once stood on Lake Superior’s shore but is now a ghost town.
Jackfish has been nominated for both the Amazon.ca/Books in Canada First Novel Award and the Canadian Authors Association Award for Adult Literature.
The book has also been adopted by York University for its Bridging Program for Women, which helps give women who have been out of school for two or more years the confidence to pursue higher education.
Published by Inanna Publications and Education Inc. in Toronto, Jackfish the Vanishing Village is available from Coles the Book People in Sault Ste. Marie and online at Amazon.ca.
