Students from Paso Robles Joint Unified School District challenged their reading comprehension in the first-ever districtwide Grand Battle as part of the Battle of the Books 2008.
On Wednesday, contestants convened at the Paso Robles City Hall/Library Conference Center along with an audience of parents, district officials and teachers for the finale of a program geared to promote reading. Last year was the program’s pilot year with four out of the six elementary school sites in the district participating. In 2008, all six elementary school sites participated. It was Bauer-Speck and Virginia Peterson elementary schools’ first year participating in the event.
The books range from shorter books like the 33-page “Velveteen Rabbit†by author Margery Williams and illustrator William Nicholson to longer novels such as J.R.R. Tolkien’s 320-page novel “The Hobbit,†organizers said. Students can choose from a list of 30 books, which are also on in the district’s accelerated reading list, and earn classroom points.
Each school handled the program a bit different. Using Pat Butler Elementary School as an example, students were also required to complete a summary form with title, author, characters — all the different elements that trigger memory, including a summary that can later be used to quiz. Students meet in groups for activities and quizzes throughout the duration of the program period.
