Where babies and toddlers go, politicians on the campaign trail are sure to follow. But Associate Health Minister Damien O;Connor and National Party leader John Key had the excuse yesterday that it was all for a good cause.
Mr O;Connor was launching a draft national strategy to increase breastfeeding rates, while Mr Key was helping promote Playcentre.
As breastfed babies, Hamish, Hana, Maia and Eliza will have improved resistance against illnesses, better mental development and lower levels of cardiovascular disease in later life, the strategy says.
They are also less likely to develop diabetes or become obese.
Only 12 per cent of Kiwi babies are exclusively breastfed in their first six months of life, according to officials.
Meanwhile, Mr Key got a fair hearing from the 60 toddlers gathered at Parliament to promote Playcentre Awareness Week.
One-year-old Madeline Brown was all ears as Mr Key explained his play-dough theory.
It would have made a rare change from the typical parliamentary exchange.
